Internship

The actual reason why I am in Texas, is the opportunity Beth gave me, to shadow her equine vet, Dr. Gene White. Which I appreciate a lot!

Dr. White graduated from the vet school at Texas A&M University 1966, and have had his practice "Diamond W Equine Service" for more than 20 years. In 2006 he won the "Equine Practitioner of the year Award"

If you want to, you can read more about Diamond W Equine Service here: http://www.diamondwequine.com.

It is very exciting, fun, interesting, and fascinating to watch Dr. White doing his work. He is very loved by his clients, and almost all his clients point out that he is the best vet! And I can only agree because he does really care about the horses, and does a very good job.
He does everything from vaccines, injections, teeth, coggings tests, body condition scoring, endocrine testing, emergency calls, lame horses, x-ray, ultrasound scanning, arthroscopy, castrations, and whatever a client needs to be done.

Most of the time I help Dr. White to care the things, and when needed help to setup the x-raymachine, and put it down again. Sometimes I hold the horses for the owners, for example when they get their teeth floated. I have tried to give shots in the muscle, listened to the goth sounds and heartbeats, looked trough a arthroscopy in the a horse's infected lungs/air pipe, and sometimes I am just watching.

It is so exciting, and I am so in love with the veterinarian job!

The following post contains images that may be disturbing to some readers.

Sunrise on the parking lot at the office!

These two cuties are Dr. White's dogs. A lab called Bear,
and an australian shepherd called Aggie

I tried to take a picture of them outside my car. This is the result.
They are not very easy to photograph.... ;)
One of Dr. White's clients was so nice, to take this picture of Dr. White,
her horse, and me.
This horse had cut her face on something sharp. Dr. White is draining and sewing
it, while I am holding the head.

The vet truck!
Dr. White and the owner of this horse are giving him  intravenous fluids.

2 wolf teeths from a two and a half years old gelding.
The two very small spots that don't have blood on it, is the only part of
the teeth that you can see before you pull the tooth. The parts with blood on it,
are the tooth roots.

My nice view from my seat in the vet truck!
(I like that I can see the traffic behind us ;) )

Dr. White is floating teeth.

Blocking the heel on the horse, to check if he should have
navicular disaese, which is a chronic heel pain.

This is Melissa working at the office.

Shadowing Dr. White has been an absolutely amazing experience, and I am so happy that I got to do that. I really appreciate every minute of his time, and admire his work.
Thank you so much Dr. White! Thank you!
And thanks to Sharon and Melissa, for letting me hang around with them at the office! I appreciate everything!

North Carolina

Jenny and I went this weekend (Nov. 22-24) to visit her roommate from college. Her roommate’s name is Lyell, and she loves horses and horses back riding as I do, and she does the fox hunting.

Our little rental car..

Lyell have a big property in North Carolina with a few horses, and of course I went horseback riding with her.

Just a little horse... Not that big…. At all..

Cutie horsie. He's name is Allstar.

The nature at, and around the property is so beautiful, and I do just want to share some pictures.

The house!

Jenny and Lyell in front of a beautiful entrée with big trees.
On the trees is hanging spanish moss.

I drove around on this with Lyell's husband, to see the property and
take pictures.

Believe it or not, I actually walked on this thing!

Bug eating plants.

Just a very nice view!

Lyell and her husband do also have a home at the east coast. Unfortunately we didn’t get there sooner than 1 hour before it gets dark, so I didn’t get to take that many pictures. But I’ll show you some of the few that I got.

The Camp

The 8th to 10th of November, Randy, Charlie, and I went to the camp with one of their friends, Colin. It takes about 2.5 hours to get there in a car but it is absolute worth it. And…. You know, I am in the U.S… 2.5 hours is not a big deal to drive.. ;)

The house at the camp

The camp is a place they use to relax, be outdoor, to hang around with friends, and to go deer-, duck-, and pig hunting. They have a lot of land to go hunting, and I think they have 3 feeders with corn, and to deer blinds. Then they have to ponds, one is called "the duckpond" where they go hunt duck.

The duckpond.
The pig trap.

A deer blind to the right, and a feeder between the trees on the left.

The same deer blind from another view.
Their land. The white little spot is another deer blind.

Cruising around on the four wheeler to take
pictures of their property.

The pond in front of the house.

We arrived around 7 pm, and ate fritos-pie, which is corn chips crunched in to a bowl, and then you add chili beans. It doesn't look like a pie at all but is tasty and very spicy… I unfortunately didn't take a picture of it… ;)
The next morning we got up at 5.50 am to go duck hunting while the sun rises. Actually the three others were the ones who hunted. I was just watching!

Randy was the only one who shot a duck.

Randy and the duck.

Me and the duck.

How many hunters do you see?

The last long period they haven't have water
in the duck pond, so now that they have, they had to move
the feeder out of the water.
Randy, Charlie, and I went to put up the deer blind from the pond, at another spot on the property. At that spot we picked some…. vegetables…. that I don't remember the name of, but they tasted good!
Later we went around in the forest to remove the big boughs, that were in the way for the upper seat in the jeep.

Of course I found the biggest ones!
I'm lying, Charlie found some big ones too… ;)

They had to fell some trees, so they would be able
to see the pigs from the deer blind.

Colin fells the big boughs from the jeep, and Randy
removes them from the road.

Teamwork!!!

I almost learned how to shoot a gun… Except the one fact, that I later on found out that Randy didn't tell me, I was doing it wrong... Because, I showed Dr. White (the veterinarian I shadow (he goes hunting too)) a picture of me shooting a shotgun..

This is the picture...
This is how you are supposed to do it..
Actually Dr. White went out of the truck, and showed me how to do it..
So now, I am so ready for go shooting the next time we go to the camp. That
will be at Thanksgiving!
I also shot a pistol!
44 magnum if anybody should care ;)

Now I just want to show some nature pictures from the camp…
